About BOW

The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW) program began in 1991, when it was first offered through the University of Winsconsin-Stevens Point.  The program was created as the result of a study conducted by Professor Christine Thomas, which determined that women preferred to learn hunting, fishing and outdoor skills in a non-competitive atmosphere along with other like-minded women.

More than 80 weekend-long workshops are held across North America each year.  In Maine we hold our three-day introductory skills workshop in the fall at Camp Caribou in Winslow.  We also hold Beyond BOW workshops throughout the year in various parts of the State.  Beyond BOW workshops provide opportunity for participants to learn additional skills in specific topics.

The Becoming an Outdoors-Woman program is co-sponsored by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife and the Friends of Maine BOW. Becoming an Outdoors-Woman means becoming more competent, more confident and more aware.  Through this program we hope to not only provide the opportunity to learn about the outdoors but to also provide a venue for women to learn more about themselves.  Participation in these workshops has provided countless women with life changing experiences.
